Experts reveal how often you should replace your toilet seat

It is one of the most frequently used items in any home, but many people fail to replace it as needed. People typically visit the toilet between six and seven times a day, with this number potentially higher for older or pregnant women.

Amazingly, most Reddit users on the “CleaningTips” thread confessed that they only replace their toilet seat when it breaks. In some cases, a replacement is never put in place, the Mirror reports.

However, an expert weighed in on the debate and revealed that they need to be replaced – even more regularly than many think. Summer Little, of Prescott Design, said the chair should be replaced every five years.

She said: “In general, a toilet will last longer than the toilet seat many times over. You should expect to replace a toilet seat every five years or so, depending on use. No one wants to be greeted by a dirty toilet seat, if there’s a crack or stain persists even after cleaning, it’s ready for retirement.”

Other experts agree and urge people to replace seats before they break. Sean Richardson, director and plumber at Complete Plumbing, revealed that the lifespan of toilet seats can vary between five and 10 years, but some seats need changing longer than most.

He said: “Wooden toilet seats, although used less often now, need to be replaced more often. The finish can wear over time and chip more easily due to water damage. Cheaper plastic seats can similarly discolor over time and become a problem. “

The advice came amid a flurry of comments on Reddit, where many confessed their toilet seat sins. One said: “We replaced ours last year to have one with the toddler seat plus the old one was wavy. It was the only time I had to replace a toilet seat. As a child, my parents replaced a worn chair. low toilet seats are quite affordable, so if your seat needs replacing, just do it.”
