Twin shootings in Birmingham kill 7 people, including toddler in Alabama

Four people were killed in a shooting at a Birmingham nightclub on Saturday night, with three other deaths, including a toddler, occurring earlier in the day in another shooting outside a residences.

Police responded to reports of multiple shooting victims outside the nightclub shortly after 11 p.m., where a man was pronounced dead at the scene and two women were found dead inside the club. A second man succumbed to his injuries at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, with at least nine other victims receiving treatment for gunshot wounds, either transported by emergency services or arriving on their own.

Investigators suspect at least one gunman fired into the nightclub from outside, and federal law enforcement agencies are assisting Birmingham police with the investigation.

Earlier in the day, around 5:20 p.m., police responded to a car accident and found a car with gunshot damage in the front yard of a home. Inside were a man, a woman and a boy believed to be around five years old, all fatally injured. Authorities believe this incident was a targeted shooting and the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin took to social media to stress the urgency of catching those responsible, saying swift justice was essential for the victims and their families. Police urged local residents to provide any home surveillance footage that could assist the investigation.

In a statement on Sunday, Birmingham police said they “remain resolute in our mission to ensure justice for the victims”.

“We are working tirelessly to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice,” police said. “The Birmingham Police Department is dedicated to protecting our community and restoring a sense of safety and security.”
