Recovery mission underway in Port Stanley

A volunteer human chain walked along the waterfront in Port Stanley, Ont. Search Sunday for boy missing in Lake Erie.

Around 2:30 p.m. OPP and Central Elgin Fire were dispatched to the main beach after a 14-year-old boy went into the water and did not resurface.

Central Elgin lifeguards, as well as an OPP helicopter and marine unit entered the water hours after the teenager went missing.

An OPP dive team arrived after 6:00 pm to assist in the search.

CTV News has learned that the teenager’s father and a brother moved to Canada less than a year ago from Turkey after suffering another family loss.

The teenager’s mother was taken to St. Thomas-Elgin after suffering an affliction while the father waited on the beach.

He was observed speaking with the OPP and victim services during the searches.

At the time the boy entered the water, the beach was being flagged as yellow, but it changed to red after lifeguards had to leave the station to help with the search.

Recovery efforts will continue until the boy is found.
