Leeds United signed midfielder Joe Rothwell from Bournemouth on a season-long loan this week, adding depth and quality to their midfield.

Transfers have taken a while to get going for Leeds due to the lack of promotion back to the Premier League, but three are now on the door.

After Joe Rodon and Alex Cairns, Joe Rothwell has become the club’s third signing of this summer window.

Joe Rothwell has joined on a season-long loan from Bournemouth

Rothwell joined the Whites on a season-long loan on Thursday, completing a deal to move from Bournemouth on the back of helping Southampton to promotion last season.

The 29-year-old has a purchase option in his contract at Elland Road, looking to impress Daniel Farke after becoming surplus to requirements at Premier League Bournemouth.

Speaking about his move to LS11, he gave an insight into the type of player he is and what Leeds fans can expect from him in 24/25, via LUTV:

“I’m a central midfielder, I like to try to lift the ball a bit deeper and drive with the ball. I think that’s one of the main qualities that I have and it’s something that has stood me in good stead throughout my career, so it’s going to be something that I try to emulate here and hopefully the fans enjoy what what I do.”

Rothwell outlined here why he will be good for Leeds

After losing Archie Gray, Leeds needed a new midfielder and with Rothwell, it’s clear Farke wanted some extra experience in the side.

Rothwell emphasized that here by talking about what has worked for him throughout his career at the age of 29.

In terms of the actual qualities he will bring to our set-up, he is certainly a different profile to our other midfielders, with Ilia Gruev and Glen Kamara metronomic in their passing pace, while Ethan Ampadu has a bit of all from the front of the back. four.

Rothwell can carry the ball well through the middle of the park and is much more physically robust than Kamara and Gruev, the pair he will compete with for a starting dual pivot spot.

He’s not someone to add double-figure goals and help like a Gabriel Sara to the Leeds line-up, but he’s someone who can add a bit more edge to the way Leeds build from deep, breaking lines and drive forward to- and supports the attackers. .

Add to that his ability to seriously kick a football and we get a solid signature, although not a “needle” per se.
