Thousands of Coventry families hit by two-child benefit cap

Thousands of families in Coventry have been affected by the two-child limit, it has been confirmed. Figures show 5,600 households in the city are on Universal Credit or Child Tax Credit.

And of those, 3,400 – 61 per cent – were affected by the policy capping Child Benefit. You can see the full breakdown for your area on our interactive map below.




A total of 1.6 million children in the UK lived in households affected by the two-child benefit cap policy in the year to April. The majority of these children (1.3 million) lived in a Universal Credit household, while 270,000 were in a Child Tax Credit household.

The two-child benefit cap prevents parents from claiming Child Tax Credit or Universal Credit for more than two children and was introduced by the Conservative government in 2017. The cap affected a record 450,000 UK households in the year to April 2024. .

The majority of these households (270,000) were employed, with 180,000 unemployed. Almost two-thirds (61%) of households in receipt of Universal Credit or Child Tax Credit have been affected by the policy.
