Rain alert issued for Leicestershire warning of potential flooding

A yellow rain alert has been issued for Leicestershire, along with a warning that flooding is possible for some. The conditions could lead to travel disruption later today, the Met Office said.

The warning covers the whole of Leicestershire as well as large areas of the UK from Truro to Whitby. The alert comes into force from 3pm today (Monday 15 July) and will be in place until early tomorrow (Tuesday 16 July).

According to the latest forecasts, heavy rain is expected in Leicestershire this evening. The Met Office warned that the yellow alert could lead to “localized flooding” in some areas.

Ahead of this, light rain is expected across the county, but it is the heavier rain that is expected to cause some problems. The Met Office says heavy rain this evening could “lead to difficult driving conditions” due to splashing and flooding. Some road closures are also possible.

Forecasters also warned that between 15 and 20mm of rain could fall “in less than an hour” in some areas, but did not specify where. They also warned that the heavy rain could come with a “thunder risk” for some.
