Spain is the champion of Europe after defeating England 2-1 in the final in Berlin on Sunday evening.

Club football is back in the limelight for Leeds fans after Euro 2024 ended on Sunday night, with the first friendly on the schedule taking place on Friday.

The final was the second in a row in the competition for Gareth Southgate’s England, but they faced a Spanish side that was comfortably their best performance of the tournament.

After a tense and well-contested first half, Spain took the lead just after the break through Nico Williams, who broke into space in the box.

Cole Palmer’s stunning equalizer brought England back into the game before Southgate’s side went back into their shell as substitute Mikel Oyarzabal converted the winner in the 86th minute.

It saw Spain lift the trophy under impressive coach Luis de la Fuente, who has now won the European Championships at U19, U21 and senior level.

Junior Firpo was part of de la Fuente’s U21 side that won the 2019 Championships and reacted to their triumph last night:

“DON LUIS DE LA FUENTE!

“Congratulations Spain, well deserved. Very happy for all the former teammates who are now European champions.”

England fans in Leeds are out of luck when it comes to the final

Losing at Wembley and then seeing England lose in the Euro 2024 final is hard to take, but on both occasions the better side won the game.

It’s a testament to de la Fuente to translate his performances with Firpo and co at youth level into a senior capacity and get results.

The bright side of last night is that club football is now back and Leeds fans can look forward to the start of the pre-season run on Friday.
