There is a push for the owners to get a license in Brent

Time is running out for landlords and letting agents in Brent to get their licence.

Those who don’t will soon face heavy fines or prosecution.

Brent Council is actively enforcing the licensing scheme and looking for unlicensed landlords.

Borough-wide licensing in Brent is the law from April 2024. All landlords letting property in Brent, except Wembley Park, must obtain a licence.

The scheme aims to improve tenants’ living standards and build on Brent’s positive relationships with private landlords.

Leader of Brent Council, Councilor Muhammed Butt, said:

We have received over eight thousand requests, but we know that there are several thousand requests that have yet to be made.

Our message is clear to those owners who have not yet applied for their license: your time is running out. Our enforcement team will find you if you choose to ignore the law and breaking the law can cost you up to £30,000 in fines and also a prosecution.

In 2023, the council issued the first banning order against a landlord, preventing them from renting out homes in England for five years. Brent Council say they license more multi-occupancy houses than any other borough in London and have one of the most proactive enforcement teams in the capital.

Brent Council’s message is clear. Don’t get caught, get your license.
