Cost of living help for parents this summer – and some could get more than £180

Thousands of parents will receive help with the cost of living during the summer holidays – and some families could receive more than £180.

The aid comes from the Household Support Fund. This government-funded scheme provided money to local councils, which is then used to provide cost of living support to people in their communities. Each council decides what help they will give, this means it can be a postcode lottery for the help available.

Lambeth Borough Council recently revealed what help it will provide. One of its measures will be to offer low-income households free school meal vouchers for the summer holidays. Households receiving free school meals on an income basis or claiming certain benefits will be eligible.

Vouchers will offer discounts of up to £15 per week for each eligible child. This means a household with two children could receive £180 worth of support during the six-week school holidays. Households with three children could receive up to £270 in financial aid. School meal vouchers will be issued automatically by schools, with no application required.

Councilor Nanda Manley-Browne Cabinet Member for Equalities, Governance and Change said: The cost of living crisis continues to put huge pressure on the budgets of Lambeth residents. Prices for essential products are still much higher than they were in 2021, while household incomes for the most deprived are largely the same. This funding package will provide immediate relief for vulnerable residents, as well as help tackle long-term poverty and build financial resilience.”

In its announcement, Lambeth Council said it would work to continue providing support for the next 12 months. To fund the support programme, Lambeth Council is using our latest Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Household Support Fund allocation of £2.7m, alongside £1.3m of council funds.

If you don’t live in Lambeth then you won’t be able to claim this help, but the local council will give you its own help through the household support fund. Local authorities have shared what support they are providing between April and September 2024, when the scheme will end. To find out what this is about, you should go to your local council’s website. They will usually have a separate cost of living tab detailing the help provided.
