The commissioner does not bite on expansion

DALLAS — When it came to questions about the possible future expansion of the SEC, Greg Sankey didn’t bite.

“We’re focused on the 16th, period,” said the league’s 10th-year commissioner. “You’ve seen how we’ve made decisions over the last decade, plus neighboring states to join. I think it is incredibly wise and provides remarkable power. I won’t guess what happens next.”

Sankey was under even more pressure, especially with the possible breakup of the Atlantic Coast Conference. But he didn’t budge.

“We focus on our 16 members. I have a responsibility to be careful and I certainly won’t fuel speculation about what will happen next. We can definitely stay at 16 for a long, long time and be incredibly successful.”

With the addition of Texas and Oklahoma, this year’s SEC football media days were held in Dallas for the first time. Next year, it will return to the more traditional SEC country of Atlanta, which will host the event for the third time.
