M4 traffic is at a standstill after a multi-vehicle rush hour crash

Traffic on the M4 has been stopped near Bristol this afternoon (Monday 15 July) due to an accident on the Prince of Wales Bridge. There were major delays on the M4 between junction 22 and 23 following a multi-vehicle crash, but traffic is now clearing.

National Highways has warned drivers of long delays. It said: “Following a multi-vehicle collision, the #M4 #PrinceofWales bridge is blocked westbound between J22 and J23. All emergency services and #TrafficOfficers are on the way. Please allow extra time for your journey as delays are starting to occur.




Road and traffic monitoring website Inrix first reported the accident at 4.36pm. It said: “All traffic temporarily stopped and traffic stationary due to accident on M4 Prince of Wales bridge westbound between J22 M49 and J23 M48. Just before 4:50 p.m., all traffic was stopped.”

Emergency services have been contacted for more information.

Traffic stopped for the second time

Just before 6:00 p.m., all traffic was stopped for the second time. Traffic is also congested on the M49 northbound.

The second accident

Long delays and one lane closed due to recovery work and the accident on the M4 Prince of Wales bridge westbound between J22 M49 and J23 M48. Just before 6 p.m., traffic was stopped for a second time for about 10 minutes.

There was a second accident in the tailings shortly after. Traffic is also congested on the M49 northbound.

Closure of the M4 lane

Long delays and one lane closed due to the accident on the westbound M4 Prince of Wales Bridge between J22 M49 and J23 M48. Just before 16:50 all traffic was stopped for about 20 minutes. Traffic is also congested on the M49 northbound.

40 minute delays

National Highways warns:

Vehicles involved in the earlier collision on the #M4#PrinceofWales bridge westbound J22-J23 have been cleared to lane 1. Lanes 2 and 3 of (3) are now open after the scene with recovery arranged and en route. There are delays of up to 40 minutes on approach.
