Spanish media react as Manchester United beat Real Madrid to sign Leny Yoro

Manchester United have won the race to sign Leny Yoro ahead of Spanish champions Real Madrid.

Having successfully persuaded Kylian Mbappe to wait until 2023 and sign in 2024 on a free transfer, Real wanted Leny Yoro to sign when his contract expired in 2025.

This relaxed and overconfident transfer strategy came back to bite them, with Manchester United stepping in to offload Leny Yoro.

Yoro has undergone a medical with Manchester United and is set to sign a five-year contract with the Red Devils.

United’s deal was met with disappointment in Spain amid hopes Real would sign the promising 18-year-old.

The Spanish press reacts to the agreement with Leny Yoro

Real Madrid had been favorites to sign Leny Yoro and there may have been early concern that they would panic and try to hijack Manchester United’s move after the club closed in on his signature.

Marca confirmed that was not the case, reporting immediately after hearing United had reached a deal: “Real Madrid almost gave up on signing Leny Yoro.”

Even if they wanted to make a late play, “all indications are that it’s already too late.”

Their report said Real considered the package United agreed with Lille to be “excessive for a player with just one year on his contract”.

Mundo Deportivo note that Yoro would have been Real Madrid’s “fourth choice” centre-back, hinting at why he may not be able to match United’s price tag.

The report claims that Real will now shift focus to trying to sign another target – although it is unclear who at this point.

Sport paint a picture of a more problematic situation, noting that Real’s third option, David Alaba, is currently out with a long-term injury.

Despite this, Yoro has faced a battle with Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger for playing time, and the publication claim that “those close to Yoro” have tried to explain that he will get more playing time at Manchester United than at Real Madrid.

United won Yoro

Fabrizio Romano explained how United convinced Leny Yoro to forget about Real Madrid.

The Red Devils’ “aggressive” pitch to land Yoro has made him a central part of the team’s plans to make him a “superstar” at the club.

There is a place in United’s squad following Raphael Varane’s exit and Yoro has decided to move to Old Trafford.

His introduction is a major statement from new investors Ineos, demonstrating a pulling power that was lacking when the club tried to sign Jude Bellingham in 2020.
