The new care workforce strategy sets out an ambitious vision for the future

A new social care strategy for adults has been published, setting out ambitious plans to recruit and retain Cornwall’s workforce.

The strategy has been published by Cornwall Council and sets out actions which will support employers to improve training, career paths and wellbeing support which will help attract more people into the care sector.

The launch of this strategy anticipates the launch of the national care workforce strategy on 18 July.

Cornwall Council’s cabinet member for adult social care and health, Cllr Andy Virr said: “Our workforce is our greatest strength and is at the heart of everything we do. We recognize the significant pressures facing care providers in Cornwall and the need to change the care model to meet current and future needs.”

“This strategy outlines the ways in which we will support people to experience good work and provide excellent social care by giving the right people the right skills in the right place. The workforce should be valued for their contribution to the wider health and care sector.”

Several key strategic priorities have been identified to help deliver this strategy, which include:

  • recruitment to address the labor shortage and the necessary growth of the workforce
  • training, qualifications and career progression to ensure a skilled workforce
  • improving retention rates, providing secure jobs and recognizing workers
  • promoting health, wellbeing and equality, which is essential to building an effective workforce

Cllr Virr added: “Achieving these goals will mean working with a wide range of partners, including our local NHS partners and care providers. It is a priority for stakeholders to work together to address workforce challenges and we urge them to get in touch if they want to help us implement the strategy.”
