Liverpool transfer news: Reds risk hijacking again after Man Utd lure Leny Yoro

Liverpool need to find a centre-back in the summer transfer window after losing Joel Matip, but they have already been scouted for one target and another could go elsewhere.

The Arne Slot era at Liverpool has begun, but the Reds are yet to mark it with new signings in the summer transfer window.

The departures of Joel Matip, Adrian and Thiago Alcantara, and the fact that Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all entered the final year of their contracts, means some deals need to be done on Merseyside.

There was one signing on Wednesday afternoon, but it wasn’t the one many Liverpool fans are craving. Former Everton defender John Heitinga has joined the club to become assistant manager Slot.

Supporters hope a current defender could also be on the cards after Manchester United made a move to sign Leny Yoro – a player Liverpool have also had their eye on. Here’s the latest transfer news on Liverpool, courtesy of him Football in the mirror.

FSG blamed Yoro miss

Earlier this summer it was assumed that Yoro – a talented 18-year-old centre-back – would leave Lille for Real Madrid. The Spanish side had scouted him and made his thoughts known to the young Frenchman, who was eager for movement.

However, he is now close to becoming a United player after the club agreed to pay £52m, plus a further £7m in add-ons, for his services. That came as a blow to Liverpool, who want a defender to replace Matip but didn’t go ahead because they assumed Real were on the bench.

News that Yoro had flown to Manchester for a medical on Wednesday was met with anger from some Reds fans who accused Fenway Sports Group of a lack of ambition in the transfer market.

Nice tracking of Liverpool’s target

There could also be another swoop on the horizon, with Nice lining up a move for Wolfsburg centre-back Maxence Lacroix – another Liverpool target. The French club must replace Jean-Clair Todibo, who could be on his way to West Ham after United were told they cannot sign a player from another INEOS-owned club.
