More detailed plans for Huddersfield Market

We’re sharing new images – and more details – about the improvements we’ve got planned for Huddersfield Market!

What are the plans?

Once complete, Huddersfield Market will offer an even better traditional market with a better food and drink offer to complement what is happening in the surrounding area. It will have a more vibrant calendar of events. And it will have fresher and more innovative support for local businesses and entrepreneurs, which should boost downtown economic growth.

This is a key part of our Huddersfield Blueprint plans, which are about attracting more traffic and creating a more vibrant and varied offer right in Huddersfield town centre. All of these works will build on the existing square on Northumberland Street and work in conjunction with other neighboring projects – such as our improvements to New Street and St. Peter’s Gardens and the development of our Cultural Heart.

As with all our other projects, we want to not only give you more reasons to visit Huddersfield, but also give you more reasons to stay in the town centre, with plenty more to enjoy while you’re at it. you are there.

What will the market look like?

There will be a market hall and courtyard – internal and external – which together offer a mix of permanent and temporary stalls, plus flexible spaces for a vibrant range of events.

In the center of the market hall will be one of these flexible areas, where the stalls can make way to open up the space. There will also be a stage and screen to support the use of this space as an event venue. We want the market to be able to support lots of different market-led activities and events – these could include more international markets, live music, maker markets, community events and a much more exciting offering around big calendar dates like it would be Christmas.

The market will also have independent permanent stands and stand-alone trading spaces that can support a lot of different types of traders. There will also be plenty of seating available – including pretty mezzanine areas that would provide an aerial view of the square and a nice place to stop and rest while better enjoying the beautiful architecture.

There will also be an open air market courtyard which again will have lots of collapsible stalls – so we can either use this courtyard to support the eclectic market or provide a free outdoor space for evenimente.

The market court will also be surrounded by accessible workspaces for local producers and entrepreneurs, who can then sell their wares right at the market.

The new market will provide a lot of support for businesses and traders. Specific areas will be tailored to new start-ups – including units dedicated to entrepreneurs launching new retail or food businesses and a fully operational kitchen designed to provide a quality setup for pop-up cafes of all types.

Business Kirklees (our business, economy and growth service) will provide a wealth of business support to these entrepreneurs through the marketplace. We want to promote more local businesses to help them grow and thrive – and this should of course bring more value back into our local economy.

What happens next?

We will be running a full public consultation on our designs for Huddersfield Market later this year – before which we will be releasing more of these concept designs, particularly around the market’s flexibility to deliver an exciting calendar of events and activities.

This consultation will give everyone – people who live or work in and around Huddersfield, or those who just like to visit the town center – the chance to comment on our plans and have your say before the building work starts next year.

How is this funded?

This work is funded by UK government investment of £16.5 million.

Councilor Cathy Scott, leader of Kirklees Council, says:

“Right across Huddersfield, our plans are to give people more reasons to come into the town center – and reasons to stay for longer periods of time. What we are creating here is not only a better and more vibrant traditional market for Huddersfield, but also a place where the local community can come together.

“We also want Huddersfield to be a place where businesses can really thrive. Through this marketplace, we will provide local entrepreneurs with access to workspaces, equipment, business support, and most importantly, opportunities that can help launch new businesses. We hope to see more traders using this market as a springboard, launching new businesses with the potential to grow and succeed, seeing the visions of talented entrepreneurs realized and bringing immediate value back into our local economy as a bonus.

“As we consult on all these plans later this year, we will be able to share more conceptual designs and more about how the market – particularly its versatility to support an eclectic calendar of events – will take place once completed. It is an exciting time for the Huddersfield Blueprint and for the future of Huddersfield.”
