Wigan Warriors’ Adam Keighran has been handed a one-match ban for a Grade B ‘Dangerous Throw/Lift’ following their St Helens derby win.

This came just over a month after he was handed a three-game ban and red card for a shoulder charge on Arron Lindop. As a result, he is reportedly suspended for the Warriors’ clash with Hull FC this weekend.

Keighran has been almost ever-present for the Warriors this year and has often been the team’s designated player. He has six tries this year and will be a key member of the Warriors’ hopes of defending their league-leading shield and Grand Final victory.

The Warriors were therefore keen to appeal his ban.

The decision was made by the RFL’s Operational Rules Tribunal last night, with Wigan succeeding on appeal.

The RFL confirmed yesterday: “Wigan Warriors’ Adam Keighran successfully contested a Grade B dangerous throw/lift charge imposed following last Friday’s Betfred Super League game against St Helens. The Independent Operational Rules Tribunal found him not guilty.”

Now, speaking ahead of the game against Hull FC, head coach Matt Peet explained why they won the appeal.

He said: “I contested the charge itself, a lot happened in that game. It was a messy game with extra Wigan players and Saints players getting involved. We felt it was unfair to put it all on Adam and made a strong case.”

He is free to play at the weekend, where Wigan face the prospect of finishing six points clear of their nearest rivals. The Warriors travel to MKM Stadium on Saturday and kick off at 2 p.m.
