Wigan MP Lisa Nandy issues statement after ‘attempted murder’ bus station stabbing.

Wigan MP Lisa Nandy issued a statement after a bus stop stabbing on Thursday afternoon (July 18). A 19-year-old man was injured in the violent attack, which was also filmed and posted on social media.

Two men, aged 19 and 30, have since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. They remain in custody to be questioned.

The videos appeared to show the 19-year-old victim lying defenseless on the floor as onlookers watched in horror. A figure is seen shouting and standing over the victim, grabbing him with one hand and raising a knife in the other, before he launches a series of blows at him.

Ms Nandy, Labor MP for Wigan, now urged people to “avoid speculation” and said “keeping the town center safe” was a “top priority”.

She wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Following the very serious incident which took place in the city center today I have been in contact with Greater Manchester Police. They immediately responded to the incident and made several arrests.

“They are also keen to reassure the people of Wigan that there are no wider risks to the public. I would ask people to refrain from speculation and contact Greater Manchester Police if they have any information that could assist the investigation.

“Keeping the city center safe is a top priority for all of us. I will have further discussions about this with the police and Wigan Council in the coming days.”

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they are aware of the footage circulating on social media and have since arrested two men, aged 30 and 19, on suspicion of attempted murder. The 19-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital. His injuries are not described as life-threatening.

A number of police vehicles blocked the main road as an air ambulance was seen landing nearby following the incident. The roads around the square were also closed.

Inspector Sam Davies, from GMP’s Wigan district, said: “Officers immediately responded to the incident and pursued the offenders. Both suspects remain in our custody and a knife has been recovered.

“Our other officers administered first aid to the victim, who was taken to hospital for treatment. While the incident will undoubtedly cause concern, I want to highlight the positive response we have provided and reassure the public that we deal with incidents of this nature. extremely serious.

“This appears to be an isolated incident and there is no indication that there is a wider risk to the community. The public should expect to see an increased police presence in the area, reassurance.

“GMP’s commitment to tackling knife crime remains a priority and we will continue to work with partners to identify those involved, provide preventative advice and ensure that those who carry and use weapons are brought to justice .

“One person injured with a knife is too many and we do a lot of proactive and educational work within the force to help get knives off the streets.”
