Cornwall head coach Mike Abbott hailed his side after their dramatic first win of the season at Midlands Hurricanes.

David Weetman and Cameron Brown scored in the last five minutes after the home side’s Blake Broadbent was blocked to win 24-22.

The win keeps Cornwall second from the bottom of League One, but they are now four points behind the Hurricanes and North Wales Crusaders.

“I think in our recent games we’ve been building it and we’ve talked about it after games where we’ve been good in patches,” Abbott said after the win.

“It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish, and I think we’ve built on something and we’ve got to continue that.

“We’re a good side and I’m making it up to the boys for taking a bit of a beating this year for some performances.”

Cornwall started well as Tom Ashton gave them a sixth-minute lead but three tries in an 11-minute spell from Liam Welham, Jake Sweeting and Jason Bass gave the Hurricanes a 16- 6 at halftime.

Nathan Conroy replied for Cornwall early in the second half, but when Callum McLelland crossed just after the hour, it looked like the Midlands would be victorious.

But Cornwall were up to the task and when Broadbent was blocked for a late kick with six minutes remaining, the Coughs struck twice to avenge a painful 72-6 home defeat to the Hurricanes last month.

“I thought they put us under a lot of pressure in the first half,” Abbott added.

“At half-time, I said in the second half that he’s going to say you’re going to tell about yourself, there’s going to be times in the second half where you’ve made so many saves, where you’re going to have to work extra.

“They accepted it and all agreed they would go to work.

“So to score late like we did shows how well we did.”
