Cecilia Liolios, a recent graduate of Char-Lan District High School, is one of three winners of the Ontario Winter Games Legacy Awards. The prestigious $1,500 scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who are pursuing post-secondary education and have demonstrated athletic excellence in the Cornwall and SDG communities. The criteria used for selection are based on athletic achievement, leadership and citizenship.

Cornwall Mayor Justin Towndale introduced the graduates Leo Logan Currier and Siri Neville with their awards during the July 9 council meeting.

“She’s a very talented athlete, a strong student, a leader in her community. She was accepted to Trent University for psychology and forensics and was offered a spot on the Trent University Excalibur soccer team,” MacDonald said. “Cecilia has generously and actively given her time to contribute to her school and community. She has volunteered for Beyond 21 and the Williamstown Fair. She has also used her athletic talents and supported various teams and community events through refereeing, coaching and padding, including the 2023 Special Olympics soccer tournament.”

Glen Stor Dun Lodge receives over $335,000

cone Martin Lang, who sits on the board of Glen Stor Dun Lodge, offered some good news.

Lang shared that the long-term care home owned and operated by the city of Cornwall received a large funding package, “totaling $335,000 and change, from the government. In addition, there is a 6.6 percent increase in the day care level of funding for a total of $549,000. Hopefully 6.6 will continue…but we’re not sure about that at this point.”

Cornwall Communications’ Nick McRoberts confirmed the details on Thursday, saying: “Glen Stor Dun Lodge received funding through the Ministry of Long Term Care (MLTC) in May this year. This investment translates into a one-off payment of $2,543 per bed and is intended to provide financial support to help alleviate financial pressures and address key priorities, including maintenance and development projects. The City of Cornwall welcomes this investment as we continue to provide quality care to residents.”

SDG Library Annual Report

Director of Library Services Rebecca Luck presented the board with some of the key findings of the SDG Library Annual Report 2023.

“The SDG library is not just books. We strive for digital equity, being equipped with 45 public access computers, complete with wifi services. We have 40 mobile hotspots that have been borrowed 657 times in 2023,” Luck said. “Residents in SDG counties can access language learning courses, newspapers, e-books, audiobooks, movies, French-language content and more… all for free with their library card.”

Active membership card holders increased by 20% from 2022 to 2023, totaling 9,537 residents. Operating income and expenses even reached $2,855,438, with funds spent on physical collection materials, electronic resources, personnel, and more.

“(The statistics) prove to us that we are right to support the library,” said Coun. Tony Fraser.
