Latest Politics: Starmer announces £84m to ‘catch’ migration ‘crisis’ after summit with EU leaders | Political news

Ali Fortescue then asks Labour’s Nick Thomas-Symonds about the upcoming US election turnout and the impact a Donald Trump victory could have on support for Ukraine.

Was this discussed at the EPC summit?

“Well, we talked about Europe here,” he tells Ali. “We talked about European solidarity supporting President Zelensky and Ukraine.

“As for the US presidential election, that is a matter for the American people to decide, regardless of who they elect as president.

“We as the UK government will work with them. We have a special relationship, a deep special relationship created in the most difficult historical circumstances, and I have no doubt that it will last well into the future.”

But European politicians certainly have concerns, especially after the announcement of JD Vance as his running mate – who has been highly critical of spending American money on a war in Europe.

“Well, let’s see what happens,” says Mr Thomas-Symonds. “I’m not going to start hypothesizing, start anticipating what may or may not happen.

“What’s happening here is that the American people have a decision to make. They’re making that decision. We’re going to respect that decision.

“We will always act in the UK’s national interest and we will work with whoever is the president of the United States because that is in the UK’s national interest. And this is exactly what this government will do.”
