Toronto food bank is asking for help after flooding damaged facility

TORONTO — A major Toronto food bank is appealing for urgent donations after flooding triggered by torrential rains earlier this week damaged its facility and destroyed a large amount of food.

The North York Harvest Food Bank says loading docks at its facility were flooded and water poured into its warehouse.

An ensuing power outage is said to have meant it lost a significant amount of refrigerated food, including milk, cheese, meat and children’s snacks.

The food bank says its crews were able to salvage some items, but the flood also damaged one of its delivery trucks.

The North York Harvest Food Bank says it supports about 25,000 people each month.

More than 100 millimeters of rain were reported to have fallen in Toronto on Tuesday, causing flooding and power outages in the city.
