Major investment has been approved for the Kirklees Highways Network

Kirklees Council’s Highways Capital Plan 2024-2026 it was approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday 9 July. The plan details £41m of investment over two years and covers all aspects of the essential motorway works.

These include road surface and potholes, street lighting, road safety, flood management and drainage, traffic signals, car parking, cycle facilities and public transport provision.

In addition to the plan, the Department for Transport (DfT) gave the council £500,000 from Green Light Fund to improve the road signal. Along with £875,000 from Regional Settlement for Sustainable Transport (CRSTS) for Kirklees speed limit review. With an additional share of £72,600 West Yorkshire Combined Authority Traffic Signal Obsolescence Grantas well as The North Network funding of £1,843,934.

Cllr Cathy Scott, Leader of Kirklees Councilsaid to Kirklees Together: “Maintaining and improving our motorway network is vital to developing Kirklees as a place where people want to live, work and visit. Continued investment improves access links between our towns and villages, creating more opportunities for education, employment and training.”

“Investment in Kirklees’ motorways assets is essential to support the mode shift towards more sustainable methods of transport, investing in safer pedestrian access, cycle facilities and better access to public transport linking our town centres.”

The projects that will benefit from funding:

Projects over the next two years will see improvements to flood management with improved gullies and drains.

Local Public Rights of Way (PROW) it will see better signage, sidewalks, decks and railings, along with improved drainage and vegetation management, making areas more accessible.

Funding for Urban Traffic Control (UTC) will support the new traffic light technology. Prioritizing junction and crossing places for replacement, helping to improve journey times and prioritizing public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.

West Yorkshire Vision Zero, is a partnership working to reduce road danger and will continue to encourage a shift to more active modes of transport. This will be achieved by looking at improvements to route infrastructure, pedestrian crossings and safety on school routes, as well as additional speed management initiatives. CRSTS funding is allocated to drive economic growth, improve services and decarbonise transport.
