Expert gardening ‘must dos’ to avoid slugs permanently destroying your garden

While most plants enjoy and thrive in sunlight, it’s essential to give them extra care in warm weather. Dani Turner, director of customer experience at online florist Bunches, now advises you on when it’s best to water your plants.

Dani said that many people would like to water their plants in an evening, but this is wrong. Instead, she advises that the morning is best for a number of reasons, the Mirror reports.

She said: “The best time to water the plants in the garden is early in the morning. Watering them well before the day heats up allows water to seep through the soil to the roots, preventing water loss through evaporation.”

The advice applies both indoors and outdoors, according to Dani. She said: “For your houseplants, we always suggest that they are under water rather than over water as excess water can cause root rot amongst other problems. For a houseplant, generally a weekly watering will provide all the moisture it needs.”

Watering houseplants in the morning is also vital to prevent them from burning if exposed to direct sunlight. A simple way to determine if a plant needs watering during a heat wave is to stick your finger about an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, then the plant probably needs watering.

It is better to water plants in the morning than in the evening to avoid attracting pests such as slugs or diseases. In extremely hot weather, some indoor and outdoor plants may need to be moved out of direct sunlight.

Potted plants should also be moved to a more sheltered part of the garden for a few hours each day. The gardening expert gave advice to refrain from repotting, pruning or fertilizing during high temperatures.
