Jump into bus journeys one year after the launch of the Superloop

New data shows average passenger growth on all Superloop corridors and parallel routes since service launch is 11%

A year after the launch of Transport for London’s ‘Superloop’ express bus service, data shows that more people have started using the buses in the areas it serves.

Since the first Superloop launched in June 2023, the figures show average passenger growth on all Superloop corridors (including parallel routes) is 11%, 9% higher than the network average.

The new Superloop services have added more than six million bus kilometers a year to the capital’s network, up from the four million initially forecast. The Superloop network connects users to 310 other bus routes, 49 stations and 23 rail lines, improving London’s connectivity.

Evidence now shows that the Superloop network is helping to increase bus patronage around London. Bus ridership continues to grow across the network, with 1.86 billion bus journeys made in 2023/24. Over 95% of Londoners now live within 400 meters of a bus stop.

The final route on the new Superloop network, SL4, will start operating between Canary Wharf and Grove Park after the Silvertown Tunnel opens in 2025.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “Superloop is making a real difference by improving public transport in London, adding over six million extra bus kilometers a year to the capital’s bus network and connecting stations, town centres, hospitals and hubs Transport. .

“This new data shows that if you build it, people will come and use it, and this is just the beginning. I have bold ambitions to deliver even more improvements to London’s bus network, including Superloop 2, which would double the number of Superloop services and support my aim to build a fairer and greener London for all.”

Nick Owen, TfL’s director of buses, said: “It’s encouraging to see customer demand continue to grow in response to a new express service in London in its first year. Data shows that they are already transforming travel with millions of trips every year.

“Initial feedback seems very positive and it is proving popular with customers as many of the Superloop routes are still relatively new. However, the work is not done and we continue to review customer demand and feedback to ensure we are always adapting to customer needs and making improvements where necessary.”
