A huge generator weighing hundreds of tonnes arrives at West Country power station

A huge 82ft steam generator has been delivered to a new nuclear power station in the West Country. It is one of eight which will operate at Hinkley Point, near Bridgwater, in Somerset.

The images show the 520-tonne generator traveling over land and sea to reach the site. Each generator is expected to last at least 60 years and operate at scorching temperatures of around 295°C.

They will take heat from nuclear reactors to create steam to power the world’s largest turbines – with four generators in each reactor building. The steam generators took six years to design and are the latest addition to the high-tech nuclear plant.
