LIVE: Manchester Airport passengers face delays with huge queues stretching to car park

Footage from Manchester Airport shows passengers in long queues as the impact of the global IT outage continues to be felt.

Images sent to Manchester Evening News show the tourists queuing through the terminal three parking lot.

One traveler said it took about an hour and 45 minutes to reach the terminal building. The airport said check-in and boarding were “taking longer than usual” as airlines were affected by IT disruptions. Most operating flights were said to be “unaffected”.

In a new statement at 4pm, they said: “Global IT issues continue to affect some of our airlines. Check-in and boarding for the affected airlines is done manually and takes longer than normal, leading to some queues at check-in. Our Resilience team and customer service colleagues are on hand to assist passengers. However, if passengers are traveling with hand luggage only, they are encouraged to go straight to security.

“Flight schedules have been affected by problems caused by the effects of the global IT outage at airports around the world. This means that some flights may be delayed or canceled by airlines at short notice.

“Passengers should continue to check the status of their flights with their airlines before departing for the airport and should follow airline advice on the best time to arrive. We also recommend that you check updated travel advice as some train services have also been affected by the problems.

“We thank all our passengers for their patience and understanding.”

It comes as a botched Crowdstrike update caused major infrastructure to grind to a halt and computer systems were shut down on Friday. The outage “caused disruption to most GP practices” in England, but there was no known impact on 999 or emergency services, NHS England said.

At airports, flights were canceled and staff were forced to manually check in passengers on certain flights to help ease long queues. And one affected airline, Ryanair, urged passengers whose flights were canceled to leave the airport.

We’ll bring you the latest in the live blog below…

Airlines affected

A number of airlines, including Ryanair and KLM, said they were experiencing disruption.

Here’s what the airlines said.

What caused the outage?

It was described as the “biggest IT outage in history”, causing chaos around the world by grounding flights, train services and affecting healthcare systems.

And it all seems to have been caused by a bug in a single piece of software.

More information about what caused the problem is available here.
