The Birmingham City vs Wrexham New York game has grown amid links between Tom Brady and Ryan Reynolds

Birmingham City’s match with Wrexham could become the first EFL match to be staged in the United States.

That’s according to football finance expert Dr Rob Wilson, director of VSI Executive Education, who notes the American ownership of both clubs and the fact that both clubs are now rivals in League One.

While Wrexham has a growing following on the other side of the Atlantic, courtesy of Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the Blues hope to raise their profile following Tom Wagner’s Knighthead Group takeover and involvement NFL legend Tom Brady.

Wagner has massive plans to lift the Blues’ global standing and Wilson believes that could even mean a trip to the United States.

“Wrexham vs Birmingham City is a good bet for the first Football League game to be played abroad,” Wilson told www.olbg.com.

“Reading some data from The Customer Lifetime Value Group, they say there are tens of millions of soccer fans in the United States who are undecided about which team to follow. This is a very important market.

“You have high-profile American investors who have a celebrity following in both Wrexham and Birmingham City, so a game in a place like San Diego or New York in an iconic venue could attract fans and certainly could work. But Wrexham have a much higher profile than Birmingham City at the moment.”

It’s worth noting that there’s certainly no suggestion from anyone at the Blues that this is even a prospect under consideration.
