Harrogate Town 0-2 Leeds United LIVE goal updates as Rutter and Firpo put the visitors in charge

Welcome to live coverage of the pre-season friendly between Leeds United and Harrogate Town at Wetherby Road. Kick-off in North Yorkshire is 7.30pm, with team news at 6.30pm from both Simon Weaver and Daniel Farke.

The Whites head to Wetherby Road after amassing 90 points from 46 games last season before that day of desperation at Wembley against Southampton less than two months ago. This is the first of two public friendlies for United this summer, with Valencia following in just over a fortnight at Elland Road after a training camp in Germany.

Meanwhile, the Sulphurites finished the season in 13th place in League Two with 63 points from 46 games, finishing with a poor run of just three wins from 16 games. The big picture shows that it is the highest league level in Harrogate’s history. United’s neighbors have risen rapidly in recent years, playing in the National League North, the sixth tier, just six years ago.

These two sides have never met in a competitive match. We expect debuts for the whites, with three new arrivals since the end of last season. Catch the latest from Beren Cross throughout the blog below.

Gnonto not far

The Italian was tasked with a job he is not used to. He had to have his share of defensive responsibilities and play as a full-back on the left. He attacked forward as the half wore on.

Gets loose in the left channel and has decent pop at the gate. Not far from the remote post.

Summerville is then released by Darlow with a long ball forward. It comes out for a one-on-one, the keeper comes out and hits the wrong side of the post as we expect the net to curl.

Harry Gray enters the fray

The 15-year-old is out for Rutter. He goes straight to the center of the attack. Gelhardt on his right and Summerville on his left. The fans have already chanted his name without having made his senior debut.

Darlow error almost gives Harrogate a goal

The goalkeeper looked a little rusty this half. With the game in and around the Leeds box, it was thrown to the keeper and he cleared the pass straight to a striker. The shooting was capricious.

Leeds look set to make their next replacement with one of their remaining bench youngsters.

GOAL – White

RUTTER!

Summerville turns a corner. Harrogate doesn’t deal with that. The ball falls nicely for Rutter to smash home from 12 yards. Game over.

Darlow comes out of his box

Folarin’s pace is proving a problem for Ampadu. Back ball and the striker beats the defender. Darlow runs off and almost gets there before the two of them get stuck outside his own box.

James on target again

Rutter gets down, finds a meter of space and then threads the eye of a needle to bring James in behind for another close look at goal. He shoots rather than crosses and Belshaw does well to start him clear of danger.

Meanwhile, Debayo, Meslier and Joseph have just received a hearty ovation from the away fans as they return to the pitch to take their place in the dugout. Leeds are just starting to find their rhythm this half.

Harrogate hit the post

Harrogate started this half on top. Duke-McKenna has a look at goal with a free kick on the edge of the box. Darlow is rooted and the ball bends off the upright and bounces wide. Great effort and closest came the hosts.

Leeds look like a team with six changes.

Second half underway

Six changes for Leeds.

Meslier, Rodon, Debayo, Rothwell, Firpo, Joseph and Piroe depart. Darlow, Byram, Struijk, Crew, Gnonto, Summerville and Gelhardt further on.

Darlow; Byram, Ampadu, Struijk; James, Gruev, Crew, Gnonto; Rutter, Gelhardt, Summerville.

Half time: Harrogate 0-1 Whites

Leeds lead and dominated for long periods here, but there was some lull in the last 15 minutes of that half without many looks at goal. They have Harrogate where they want them and seem happy to go through the motions.

Joseph looked good. Rodon commands. James a live thread.

James’ pace stands out again

Harrogate hit a pass from their own box and James is on it as the Roadrunner as usual. Breaks into the box, moves away for Gruev to dig in and is headed by O’Connor. It looked like a good effort from the Bulgarian.

Joseph draws a foul

The Spaniard is showing strength as well as technical ability tonight. He took the ball in, back to goal on the edge of the box with Liam Gibson behind and the big centre-back couldn’t get him off the ball.

Win the foul. The free-kick is drilled into the wall by Gruev before forcing the rebound into another defender.

James not far

James is sent on his way through the center by Rutter with a neat pass into space. Ater is out like lightning, drives left, feeds Joseph and asks him for the backhand ball. He gets it and then shoots from a tight angle. Not too wide. They were both so animated tonight.

Drinks break

In these temperatures, there must be a water break for the players. They all go into the dugout and get a briefing from Farke as they swallow.

Whites dominate, as you’d expect.

Debayo is released from prison

Harrogate flicked a long ball over the top with Leeds in form. Firpo and Debayo run with Folarin for the ball but both seem to think the other will make the cover challenge. Neither do and Debayo almost takes a free-kick, but comes up and wins a foul of his own from Folarin.

Elsewhere, Leeds remains so wide. Rear wings push up. Rutter is starting to become more influential, dropping into neat pockets and finding teammates in space. Rodon starts every move from the center of the back three.

GOAL – White

FIRPO!

Joseph was really lively throughout this opening period. His movement was difficult for Harrogate to follow. Ampadu to all found on the right channel. He takes it, goes to the main line and then passes down for Firpo to tap.

Leeds seeing early joy on the right flank

Ampadu spreads wide in attack and provides some width, sliding the ball out wide for James to attack from deep. He has gone behind twice already with crosses in the box. Joseph got to the first and saw it blocked, while the second dodged Piroe and ran through the box.

You start

Leeds play a very fluid 3-4-3.

Tradesman; Ampadu, Rodon, Debayo; James, Gruev, Rothwell, Firpo; Rutter, Joseph, Piroe.

The teams are at Wetherby Road

We’re almost ready to go. The teams switch heads. Leeds will attack from right to left as we watch from the opposite side of the dugouts.

A first public outing for the new kit.

Thoughts on team news

The only contracted players missing from the squad tonight are Patrick Bamford, Max Wober and Brenden Aaronson. We know Bamford’s workload has been managed this summer, so it’s not a huge surprise that he’s not involved, even if it’s disappointing.

Aaronson is here after reporting for the preseason today. He is watching from the sidelines and will be looking to make an impression in the training camp in Germany. Wober was also scheduled to return today, but is not sitting with Aaronson in the dugout to watch warmups.

It looks like Debayo will start at right-back, with Ampadu alongside Rodon in defence. Rutter looks set to start on one of the flanks with Piroe playing behind Joseph through the centre.

Team news should drop in five minutes, but the team has yet to appear on the pitch at Wetherby Road. I normally arrive about 90 minutes before kick-off, but there was still no sign.

Gretar Steinsson and Jordan Miles, the club’s head of recruitment, have been spotted. Along with Eddie Gray and his wife.

Five things to watch out for tonight

When Leeds United play their first open pre-season friendly of the summer tonight, three new players should be in the squad. Although Joe Rodon has already completed one season in Leeds colours, will the other two make their official debuts?

In theory, Alex Cairns has already represented United, however, it was almost 13 years ago as a second-half substitute. This would be Joe Rothwell’s first appearance in whites.

Does Rothwell start in an engine room without many options? Rodon is almost a given to start in central defense and Cairns is a long shot to start between the sticks.
