It’s thanks to a $50,000 grant from the Joyce Family Foundation, money that’s improving Beyond 21’s offerings and expanding access to more people in Cornwall and surrounding areas.

“On behalf of Beyond 21, I express my sincere gratitude for the generous contribution of the Joyce Family Foundation,” said Beyond 21 Executive Director Amy Malyon. “Your support is critical to our mission of empowering people with developmental disabilities through various program offerings.”

Malyon said a portion of the grant will be used to facilitate the launch of a weekend and evening program this summer, offering participants engaging activities such as drum circles and taekwondo, while providing caregivers with essential respite. This will be added to the money raised during the Beyond 21 Prison and Bail fundraiser held earlier this year.

The $50,000 grant will be strategically allocated, with $30,000 dedicated to enhancing programming through additional staff, specialized equipment and outreach initiatives. The remaining $20,000 will focus on increasing affordability for families on the waiting list.

Already over 21 offers a wide range of activities that enrich social relationships, promote physical health and provide hands-on learning opportunities and has received widespread community support for years.

Beyond 21’s roots date back over 15 years; it was three years ago that the organization moved to a beautiful facility on Tollgate Road and Pitt Street. It was founded by Tish Humphries, who also serves as board chair.

“We are delighted to receive this grant,” said Humphries. “This funding will not only improve our programming, but also expand access to families on our waiting list of more than 80 eligible participants, ensuring more people and their families receive the support they need.”

Ronald V. Joyce is best known as the legendary Canadian entrepreneur who in 1964 invested in the first Tim Hortons donut shop in Hamilton, Ontario, then grew the business into one of the most successful food service chains in the world . The foundation’s vision is to build a legacy for the future, through continued leadership and innovative partnerships, by fostering enhanced and meaningful social, economic and emotional engagement for young Canadians.

Beyond 21 was in the headlines in early 2023 when The U13A Cornwall Typhoons were named winners of the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup, with $100,000 in winnings donated to the organization and efforts showcased on Hockey Night in Canada.

Beyond 21 says more than $590,000 was raised last year, there were 780 donors and more than 45 participants were served.
