Wigan Athletic are set to beat off European competition to sign the League Two striker

Wigan Athletic have reportedly snubbed European competition to secure the signing of highly-rated Fleetwood Town striker Maleace Asamoah.

The talented 21-year-old has been loaned out to League of Ireland side Waterford after linking up with them earlier this season.

He has impressed, scoring six goals and contributing four assists in just 17 games with the club’s season still underway.

However, according to Pete O’Rourke, he is now set for a move to League One with Wigan Athletic. Danish side Randers have also agreed a fee, but the player would be in favor of a move to the third tier.

Fleetwood Town saw their stay in League One end last season with relegation to the fourth tier. They have added six players to their squad, with Blackpool’s Matty Virtue perhaps one of the standout additions. Alongside the former Lincoln City man are Zach Medley, MacKenzie Hunt, Luke Hewitson, Elliott Bonds and James Bolton.

They have also seen a few departures most recently from Promise Omochere to Bristol Rovers.

A blessing in disguise for Fleetwood?

On paper, it looks like another high-quality player leaving the club at a time when they are rebuilding for life in the fourth tier, however, the youngster is yet to push his stake into the senior team.

In fact, he has made just nine appearances for Fleetwood to date without scoring. With the player on loan in Ireland and his contract set to expire in 2025, it is now or never to make a decision.

If he’s not going to make the established first team next season, it seems logical to sell him now to recoup some money on their investment rather than risk losing him for free in a few years. Hopefully Wigan Athletic can be the catalyst to unlock some of that form in the EFL.
