Why Nico Williams’ transfer hopes from Arsenal and Chelsea rest on Barcelona

English football giants Arsenal and Chelsea are closely monitoring the situation surrounding Nico Williams and his potential move to Barcelona.

Barcelona have held talks with Williams’ agent about a possible summer move from Athletic Bilbao to Camp Nou following his impressive performances at Euro 2024. Williams, 22, has become hot property after scoring twice and provided an assist during Spain’s victorious campaign. He was one of the standout performers of the tournament and attracted the interest of several clubs – including those in the Premier League.

Bilbao are insisting on full payment of Williams’ £50m ($64.6m) release clause, which must be paid in one lump sum. This could be a strategic move given the relatively low release clause for a player of his caliber in today’s market.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with the striker, but it seems Barcelona are currently leading the race. However, Barcelona’s financial fair play (FFP) issues could open the door for Arsenal to enter, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Barcelona were fined for breaching FFP regulations last year and their financial struggles are well known. The requirement to pay £50m up front could pose a problem, potentially paving the way for Williams to make a move to the Premier League.

Liverpool.com says: At just over $64 million, Williams would be a smart signing for any Premier League team. Barcelona’s financial situation makes his chances difficult, while Liverpool have every chance of beating Arsenal and Chelsea to his signature. Perhaps the Reds will move for Williams if they lose Luis Diaz, who has also been linked with Barcelona, this summer.
