Birmingham City have a ridiculous new formation with Willum Willumsson

If Birmingham City’s starting line-up at Solihull Moors on Wednesday looked good, the signing of Willum Willumsson completed a dream League One XI.

The Blues have spent the first five weeks of the summer transfer window targeting Championship-level players, so Chris Davies has had to wait patiently for reinforcements. But the signing of 25-year-old Iceland international Willumsson gives the Blues a squad their League One rivals could only dream of.

Willumsson is a commercial number 10 but can play as a forward or box-to-box midfielder. He will bring another 1.80m presence to a Blues side that has lacked the physicality to dominate from set-pieces over the past year.

There is a chance that Willumsson will feature in the Blues’ friendly with Shrewsbury Town today. The Blues take on another League One side in their third friendly at The Croud Meadow.

Davies’ starting XI against Solihull Moors on Wednesday looked strong on paper. Throw Alex Cochrane and Willumsson into the mix and the Blues team has transformed.

Cochrane faces a battle with Lee Buchanan for the left-back spot and Willumsson has to beat 17-year-old prodigy Romelle Donovan, a rejuvenated Tyler Roberts and George Hall for the No.10 spot.

The goalkeeping battle is still up for grabs and a new centre-back could threaten Dion Sanderson’s place and there are still question marks over the future of midfield duo Paik Seung-ho and Jordan James, but as it stands they are part of the plan . .
