Leicester City can raise £52m from sales to help Steve Cooper complete the squad

Leicester City have made four signings at the club so far this summer, but if they want to bring in more, they need to consider offloading players.

First of all, they need space in the team. There is a limit of 25 players who can be registered in the Premier League, but even if there wasn’t, they have to find the right balance. They need options and they need depth, but too many players on the fringes and the team becomes harder to manage. After his experience at Nottingham Forest, Steve Cooper could do without an excess of players.

But City also need cash. They have to keep the books balanced. Spending more money on transfer fees and wages without making anything back through sales will only get City into more trouble with the Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

So to build the kitty to buy an attacking midfielder and whoever else they might fancy, who do they sell? That’s a difficult question to answer at this point. Unlike Enzo Maresca, it is not yet known who Cooper’s favorites are and who will be surplus to requirements.

Certainly, now that Caleb Okoli has arrived, City have a surplus of centre-backs. Even if Cooper goes with a five at the back, he probably doesn’t need six central defenders in the team.

If Maresca was still in charge, Harry Souttar would have headed for the exit. While he has another chance to impress under Cooper, he may still be down, and if he’s going to be sold, maybe they could bring him in. 10 million pounds.

Victor Kristiansen there is another who can leave. The left-back did not feature in Maresca’s squad, but may do so under Cooper. However, he has just qualified for the Champions League with Bologna and may not now want to return to City and join what will likely be a relegation battle. To make sure you don’t make a PSR loss, a sale of approx 15 million pounds would be necessary.

Boubakary Soumare is another who spent last season on loan and impressed enough at Sevilla for them to want him back. The only thing standing in the way was the price. With Wilfred Ndidi resigning at City, Soumare could be sold but the asking price should drop to 10 million pounds to reach an agreement.

If City bring in a new striker, as many fans hope they will, then one of the current three in the squad will likely have to leave. Cooper can’t keep four forwards happy.

Maybe it’s time to part ways then Patson Daka. The Zambian struggled in front of goal at the end of last season and many have given up hope of him becoming the next Jamie Vardy. There was interest from AC Milan and Bournemouth last summer, so he could still be sold 12 million pounds.

City also have too many goalkeepers to accommodate. With Mads Hermansen and Jakub Stolarczyk established as their first-choice duo, City can afford to part with Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen. Derby are interested in the latter and City could go for it 5 million pounds for two.

Selling players has not been City’s forte in recent transfer windows, with many valuable players leaving on free transfers. Now would be the ideal time to change that, giving themselves a financial boost to help round out Cooper’s squad.
