Leeds school is ‘unrecognisable’ after Ofsted return

A school in Leeds has seen a massive improvement in its Ofsted rating after an inadequate rating in 2017.

Bishop Young Church of England Academy, on Bishops Way in Seacroft, was visited by Ofsted inspectors in 2017, who concluded the school was inadequate. It came just after the school joined the Abbey Multi Academy Trust and the national schools commissioner said Bishop Young was one of the schools causing the most concern in the country.

After a gap of seven years, an Ofsted inspection has now rated the school as good in every area. The report said the school had “high expectations” and said pupils had a “richer and more ambitious curriculum”. He also praised the “inclusive and accepting environment”, which he said helped “raise pupils’ aspirations about what they can achieve”.

It adds that students “produce work of a high standard” and said staff had access to “high-quality training”. Rachael Cole, Head of Bishop Young School, said: “This is one of those milestone moments that our community should really celebrate.

“The progress we have made is not based on quick wins, but unsustainable ones. Over the past seven years, almost every element of our school has seen changes, developments and advances. From the establishment of new standards to the creation of the Episcopal Curriculum. and the complete redesign of our enrichment offering for our students – Bishop Young is unrecognizable from what it once was.

“The fact that it has been the best part of a generation since our school was last rated Good really speaks volumes for the changes that needed to be made. That is why it is important to stop and reflect on this realization. there is much in the report that is cause for celebration – and it is only right that, after years of hard work and dedication from every member of our community, we recognize what has been achieved.”

In addition, the report said the school had “effective systems” for children with additional needs who “are well supported. All assaults were said to be “rare”.
