The police return to the Wigan home where the child’s remains have been discovered

Officers have returned to a house in Wigan where the remains of a child were found two weeks ago. Greater Manchester Police reopened the crime scene on Marsh Green today (April 26).

It comes as further police inquiries are to be completed at the scene, GMP say. Officers were initially called to the address on Wednesday, April 10.

GMP previously said it was initially called by a partner agency who reported a welfare concern. Tragically, police discovered the child’s remains two days later. The force insists the incident is still being treated as isolated

A spokesman for the force said Manchester Evening News: “Since then, our investigation has seen many resources of the force brought together to understand the circumstances under which these remains ended up here. We would like to reassure people that reopening scenes is often standard procedure, particularly during complex investigations.

“Officers and forensic experts are simply out there making further inquiries as our investigation continues.” The baby’s gender and cause of death have not yet been confirmed.

Five people, aged between 20 and 70, were arrested on suspicion of concealing an illegal death and burial. All remain on police bail at this time.

Detective Chief Inspector John Davies, who is leading the investigation for GMP, said: “This continues to be a distressing incident and unlike anything I have encountered so far in my policing career. Officers and forensic experts returned to Marsh Green today and could be there for some time.

“This is to carry out further inquiries which will ultimately assist my investigation and hopefully bring us closer to finding out the full circumstances. I want to be clear, to remove any speculation, we do not believe there are any remains that belong to others. parties at this property.

“It is being treated as an isolated incident. I understand that seeing officers back at this property may cause concern and anyone who feels this way is welcome to speak to those on the scene.

“You will be listened to and I hope you can be assured that it is just about us being as thorough as possible. My team and I are determined to get to the bottom of what happened here, but as the lawsuits and investigations are still ongoing, continue to keep an open mind.”

Anyone with information they believe could assist GMP inquiries is asked to call 101 quoting log 1609 of 10 April 2024. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
