Sign Olmo, £65m defender, Gordon appeal

Liverpool’s pre-season preparations continue as the summer transfer window fades into the background. We’re yet to see any new signings arrive at Anfield, but that doesn’t mean work isn’t being done to change that fact.

Arne Slot has worked at the AXA Training Center since the start of his reign as Liverpool’s new head coach. The 45-year-old will work alongside new sporting director Richard Hughes behind the scenes to bring new faces to Merseyside ahead of the next Premier League campaign.

The rumor mill has been in full swing since Liverpool’s previous season drew to a close. Several players have been linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks, and now that Euro 2024 is over, there are growing expectations that transfers will intensify across Europe, particularly in the Premier League.

Liverpool are now free to sign new players, but what business could they do this week? The ECHO looks at which signings the Reds could get over the line in the coming days.

Dani Olmo

Liverpool have been linked with a move for RB Leipzig star Dani Olmo for several months. The Reds are reportedly facing competition from Manchester City and Arsenal for the Spain international’s signature.

Olmo is said to have a £50m release clause in his contract with Leipzig, but this is set to expire in the coming weeks. Spain reaching the Euro 2024 final meant the deadline for the clause was extended.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool really have an interest in signing Olmo. If the answer is yes, then getting an agreement in the next few days, before the clause expires, could be a wise decision.

Marc Guehi

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is another player who has been linked with Liverpool this summer. The reports have increased in recent days following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

It has been suggested that Palace would demand £65million to be convinced to let Guehi leave the club this summer. That figure may have risen after the centre-back played a key role in England’s run to the European Championship final.

Liverpool could be on the lookout for a new centre-back this summer following Joel Matip’s free agent departure. If the Reds are to have an interest in Guehi, a deal may need to be finalized before other clubs swoop in.

Anthony Gordon

Another member of the Three Lions who was linked with Liverpool was Anthony Gordon. The Newcastle forward was part of England’s squad that reached the Euro 2024 finals, although he only got four minutes on the pitch in the entire tournament.

Liverpool were offered the chance to sign Gordon last month in a deal which would have seen Jarell Quansah head in the opposite direction to St James’ Park. This was quickly dismissed by the Reds, but interest in Gordon from the Anfield club could still be there.

Now that Gordon is on holiday and no longer on international duty, it could be easier for Liverpool to enter negotiations for a deal. Whether there is real interest in signing Gordon remains unclear.
