Police said a 30-year-old man who was arrested has been released on bail pending further enquiries. Earlier this week, Manchester Evening News told how a number of police vehicles blocked the main road following the incident as an air ambulance was seen landing nearby. Roads around the town square were also closed.

Wigan MP Lisa Nandy issued a statement and said she had been in contact with Greater Manchester Police. She said: “Keeping the town center safe is a top priority for us all. I will have further discussions about this with the police and Wigan Council in the coming days.”
