BCCI to meet IPL owners in late July to discuss player retention, salary cap: report

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auctions scheduled to take place later this year, all ten franchises are likely to discuss the player retention policy with the BCCI in a meeting in late July. The meeting is expected to be held at the Indian cricket board’s renovated headquarters in Mumbai on either July 30 or 31. However, the dates have not yet been confirmed.

According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI has asked the owners to be available for the meeting. The main agenda will be player retention as the franchises have come up with different views on this.

The report stated that older franchises requested that the number of holdouts allowed be expanded to eight. The request was made for the sake of continuity, fan engagement and brand development. On the other hand, a few favor minimal restraint.

It was also learned that franchises have different views on the Right to Match (RTM) option, debating whether to have it in mega-auctions.

It is learned that the BCCI has already sought the views of the franchises on key issues and is expected to take the final call in the meeting later this month.

Salary cap discussion

The franchises will also discuss the salary cap, which is expected to be around Rs 120 crore in the first year of the next 3-year cycle. In this case, discussions regarding the wages of the retained player will also take center stage.

According to the report, the payout for the top retainers was around 16-17 percent of the salary and if this formula is applied, the top retained players will get around 20 million lei. However, the BCCI is likely to come up with a plan to address this.
