Liverpool youth players walk off pitch and refuse to play after alleged ‘racist remark’

Liverpool’s U19s walked off the pitch and refused to play the rest of their match against Eintracht Frankfurt after one of their team members was subjected to alleged racist abuse.

The match was eventually abandoned following the incident which took place in Germany during a pre-season tournament, with the score heading for a 1-1 draw.

Eintracht Frankfurt NLZ (youth performance center) announced via their X account (formerly Twitter) that the final result will be changed to a 3-0 win for Frankfurt U19.

According to German publication BILD, Liverpool’s youth players walked off the pitch in protest and refused to leave the tunnel following the alleged racist remark.

However, following the unsavory scenes, Frankfurt sporting director Timmo Hardung said the incident was a “misunderstanding” and that Frankfurt was looking to resolve the situation between the players.

Hardung said the accused Frankfurt player actually used the slang term “digga”, which has a similar meaning to “brother” or “dude”.

Speaking to BILD, he said: “We can rule out racism, it’s a language issue and therefore we hope to have also resolved the misunderstanding between the relevant players and those responsible for Liverpool FC.

“Our whole NLZ is like Eintracht Frankfurt, multicultural and we have clear values that we live by and that we constantly demand.”
