Pictures emerge of Cameron Bancroft after a sad Sheffield Shield cricket mishap

Cameron Bancroft had facial injuries in the Sheffield Shield final after the opener was ruled out with concussion following a nasty injury before the last game of the season. Bancroft was Western Australia’s best batsman throughout the 2023/24 campaign, but a freak cycling accident just days into the season tour left him with concussion.

Bancroft has suffered nasty concussion, with a WA Cricket spokesman confirming the opener’s absence will prompt a reshuffle at the top of the order for the defending champions. The 33-year-old was forced to watch from the stands against Tasmania when the four-day game got under way at the WACA on Thursday. Western Australia lost the toss and the home team was sent into bat. And the move was reversed after a strong start with Darcy Short and Sam Whiteman leading the home side to 0-82.

Bancroft was on hand to support his colleagues in the stands. And the opener could be seen with some facial injuries after his cycling accident. Andrew Tye saw the funny side of the incident by gesturing behind Bancroft after learning the two were on camera.

The opener has been the leading run-scorer for the past two seasons and has been arguably the biggest danger man for the Tasmanian side. Fortunately for his team, Short and Whiteman were in excellent form after gathering on runs before lunch.

Cameron Bancroft insists on Australia’s position

Bancroft’s loss comes as WA bid to win three successive Sheffield Shield titles for the first time since the 1988/89 season, when they won their third consecutive title. It is also a blow to Bancroft’s hopes of further pressing his claims for a Test recall after being overlooked as David Warner’s replacement for Australia, with Steve Smith finally promoted to opener but struggles to cement his place there.

While Western Australia are looking to win their third consecutive Sheffield Shield title, Tasmania are looking to win their first Shield title since 2012/13. And they are also looking to send former Australian star Matthew Wade off with a win.

The left-handed batsman scored a match-winning knock in the semi-final of the 2021 T20 World Cup amid Australia’s run to the trophy and has won four Shield titles with Victoria – including two as captain. However, he has not tasted success with Tasmania and will be desperate to go out on a high in the Shield final against his old state.

Tasmania will also be boosted by the news that Webster has been announced as the Sheffield Shield player of the season this week. Beau Webster beat NSW batsman Ollie Davies and West Australian quick Joel Paris to claim the season-long umpires’ award.
