A40 Westway diversion routes as the main west London road closes for 3 months

One of west London’s busiest roads is to close for almost three months in two stages and drivers should expect long delays. Transport for London (TfL) has issued some suggestions for diversion routes during the works and MyLondon has looked at other alternatives with access to Westfield White City which could be a particular problem as a second set of roadworks takes place in the same time. .

A section of the A40 Westway will close between Sunday 21 July and mid-October 2024 to replace four expansion joints which are a critical part of the structure. The structures that carry the Wood Lane crossing to the Marylebone crossing are 55 years old and reaching the end of their service life, TfL says. The first of two phases of the closure starts at 10pm on Sunday and runs until 22 August.

The eastbound ramp at the Westway roundabout will be closed to all traffic, as will the southbound A3220 West Cross between the Westway roundabout and the Holland Park roundabout. Motorists will not be able to exit the A40 Westway at the Westway roundabout to join the southbound A3220 West Cross.

In addition, the A40 near Wood Lane will be extremely congested, with the southbound diversion routes and local roads also expected to be heavily congested throughout the closure.

To reach the A4, which is south of the A40 Westway, use the A312 The Parkway or the A406 North Circular. Both suggested options are west of the Westway roundabout. The Parkway is the nearest link road, but depending on traffic and the direction you are going, it may be quicker to enter the A4 via the Northern Ring Road.

The A40 Westway will remain open for travel to and from central London, but you will need to get off the A40 before the Westway roundabout, however TfL has not proposed an official diversion to do this. The most direct option is to exit the A40 eastbound onto Wood Lane northbound, using North Pole Road and St Quintin Avenue to bypass the Westway roundabout and back onto the A40, but these routes are likely to be very busy.

To complicate matters further, there could be long delays accessing Wood Lane, which runs south of the A40, parallel to the closed A3220, as the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham carry out works on Deport Road near Wood Lane until the beginning of the month September. If you don’t need access to Westfield White City, “use alternative routes”, TfL says without suggesting any.

Old Oak Road, which connects the A40 Westway with Uxbridge Road is an option, and then you can head east on Uxbridge Road to Shepherd’s Bush, which can be very busy as a result. There are several options for ditching the car and taking a train, with White City and Wood Lane tube stations a short walk north of the shopping center and Shepherd’s Bush stations to the south, which are connected to the Tube, Overground and National Rail Networks . As TfL say, it “allows more time for your journeys”.
