Cornwall launches app that is your one stop shop for all things beach

A free app has been launched to keep people safe on the Cornish coast. MyCoast handles real-time weather, tide and sea state data, along with information on local amenities.

The app created by Cornwall now covers all 60 beaches that have RNLI lifeguards for the summer season and can be downloaded from app stores. Another feature helps direct people to the most suitable conditions for their chosen activity that day.

The developers want to get as many downloads as possible this summer to secure further investment to keep developing the app – including plans to launch it in the UK. Founder Jo Murray said it was born out of her “personal frustrations” of wanting to get her family to the beach safely.

Jo said: “After several failed attempts, I soon lost the confidence to explore parts of Cornwall and going to the beach became a stressful prospect. I was determined to drive change by enabling people to ‘know before they go’ to help reduce risk and stress by providing a single point of beach information.

“While MyCoast is a constant work in progress, I am completely delighted with how far we have come and look forward to working with the Cornish community to help us constantly improve MyCoast while keeping it accurate and up to date. “

App users can choose their activities for the day, before adding if they’re taking the kids with them or have accessibility needs. They are then able to select any amenities and facilities such as parking, toilets or food and drink before they search.

MyCoast has already won the endorsement of Surf Life Saving Great Britain, Stop Drowning Above Water Charity, Cornwall Council and Visit Cornwall. For more information, visit www.my-coast.com or download it from the app stores.
