Change you must tell the DVLA or risk a £1,000 fine

Motoring experts have issued a stark warning that drivers must inform the DVLA of a key change in information. Overlooking this essential step can not only breach legal obligations, but also lead to hefty fines of up to £1,000.

An expert from Swansway Motor Group said: “Drivers need to understand the importance of notifying the DVLA when selling, buying or transferring a vehicle. This not only ensures legal compliance, but also protects the seller from potential liabilities associated with the vehicle once it is removed. of their possession.

“Failure to notify the DVLA of a change of holder can result in an initial out-of-court settlement letter demanding payment of £55. This is reduced to £35 if paid within 17 days, but the consequences can increase if ignored.

“Ignoring the requirements not only risks financial penalties; may lead to prosecution by the court as a crime. Drivers can face fines of up to £1,000, highlighting the seriousness of non-compliance.

“We urge all vehicle owners and dealers to keep accurate records and communicate promptly with the DVLA to avoid unnecessary fines and legal complications. Compliance with the Excise and Vehicle Registration Act 1994 and the Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2002 is not optional. It is a legal requirement that protects both the driver and the wider community.”
