Birmingham in 1994 – what life was like in the city 30 years ago

It seems like yesterday, but it was 30 years ago. We were feeling nostalgic, so we looked back to Birmingham in 1994.

Both Birmingham City and Aston Villa had major work carried out, with the Holte End of Villa having a total rebuild. The pictures show the famous terraces covered with rubble during the reconstruction. St. Andrew’s was the same with massive works carried out over the summer months in preparation for the new season.

Fort Dunlop was once a large employer of workers since its creation in 1901 and the factory was built in 1916 with up to 10,000 workers at its peak. Located on the outskirts of Erdington, as when it was first built, the smell of rubber was intense. The company limped along after the main factory closed in the 80s with a few specialist tires, the entire site closed for good in 2014. The main building was left empty for 20 years until Urban Splash purchased the building and converted it into offices .
