Marseille make Illan Meslier transfer decision, while Leeds United hold on

Marseille have ended their interest in Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier, according to reports in France. L’Equipe claim the French side have deemed the stopper too expensive and will look for alternative targets.

Leeds were believed to have demanded around £20million for the Frenchman, who at 24 is still relatively young for a goalkeeper. As with Georginio Rutter, it indicates the club are under no pressure to part with their top players after selling Archie Gray and Glen Kamara earlier this summer.

New Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi wanted to bring Meslier back to his native France as part of his new-look Marseille squad, but reports suggest he has had second thoughts and will not make an approach.

Meslier is under contract with Leeds until 2026 and is happy at Elland Road despite missing out on promotion to the Premier League in May. Leeds have Karl Darlow as a strong back-up, while Alex Cairns has arrived as another goalkeeping option from Salford City this summer.

However, Meslier remains the No. 1 pick. 1 for Daniel Farke and news of Marseille’s decision will no doubt go down well in the Leeds camp. The Whites could still lose a few first-team players before the transfer window closes, with Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto the subject of interest from Premier League clubs.

However, as with Meslier, Leeds will hold out for what they feel is a fair price for both, with Summerville likely to command around £35-40m and Everton told to pay around £25 million pounds to secure Gnonto’s services.
