Sheffield Wednesday gem named ‘man of the match’ after ‘excellent’ display against RB Salzburg

Sheffield Wednesday faced one of the toughest pre-season friendlies in recent years as they took on RB Salzburg yesterday.

The Owls traveled to Germany before the weekend to take part in their second training camp of the summer, before traveling to Austria to take on Pep Lijnders’ side.

Salzburg dominated at home, claiming a 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday as the gulf between the two clubs became stark.

The Austrian giants finished second in their top flight last season but faced the likes of Inter Milan and Benfica in the Champions League.

They are not expected to perform at the same level as Salzburg on Wednesday, but a controlling performance from the hosts allowed a player to show what he does best.

James Beadle made his first appearance since re-signing for the club on loan after enjoying a highly successful spell at Hillsborough last term.

James Beadle shines again

The goalkeeper started between the sticks for the first half before being replaced by the woeful George Shelvey, but 45 minutes was enough for him to make a statement.

Beadle earned a nine rating from The Star, who also claimed he was the Owls’ “man of the match”.

Journalist Alex Miller wrote: “Made a string of excellent saves early on, two of great quality from close range. A class apart on the day, saved the first half from being a completely different score line, easily man of the match on Wednesday.”

The goalkeeper could be Sheffield Wednesday’s summer signing

Wednesday have made some brilliant signings this summer and really promise to do well in the 2024/25 campaign.

Danny Rohl has made the necessary additions so far, their attack now much more threatening. However, keeping Beadle was probably just as important.

The 20-year-old had the second-highest clean sheet percentage of any goalkeeper who played more than two league games last season – claiming eight in his 19 games for the Yorkshire outfit.

Beadle has been simply “superb” and if he has been able to perform like this after only a few seasons in senior football, there is no doubt that fans will see even greater improvement in the coming year.
