The University of Bradford is bringing science to the masses by giving lectures in pubs and cafes.

The university participates in the annual Pint of Science festival, which presents scientific research to the public in an informal setting.

Topics covered at this week’s event include the effects of pollution on health and how 1.5 billion tires are thrown away each year.

The events are part of the university’s commitment to ensuring that knowledge is not confined to the laboratory and academic circles.

Jacobo Elies, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Life Sciences, said: “Pint of Science is a testament to the university’s commitment to public engagement and science communication.

“It ensures that knowledge is not just confined to academic circles, but is shared widely and enthusiastically with the community.

“So grab a drink and join the conversation, because science is for everyone and it’s happening right at your local hangout.”

BrewDog Bradford and Cafe Liza, both on Great Horton Road, are running sessions.

BrewDog assistant manager Jordan Slinn said: “Over the last few months myself, some members of staff and my manager have developed really good relationships with Bradford College and the University of Bradford.

“With that, they decided to host the event here because it’s obviously a social space and they want to create a social event around science.”

Each session costs £5, which is for two talks.

Among the lectures taking place are:

  • Mass Destruction: The Science of Irregular Warfare with Dr. Becky Alexis-Martin.
  • Re-Walking the City: People with Dementia Remember with Dr Andrea Capstick
  • Under the Microscope: Exploring the Insects on Our Hands with Dr. Sara Henderson.
  • Nanoparticles in cancer therapy: small and powerful with Dr Amalia Ruiz.

Pint of Science is a non-profit organization that organizes lectures around the country.
