Discovery Harbor offers residents a true soldier experience

Camp Britannia: A Soldier’s Overnight Adventure runs Fridays and Saturdays until August and should appeal to “those who love history and want to be immersed in this time period”.

Discovery Harbor wants to give everyone the chance to unleash their inner soldier.

This summer, Penetanguishene Historic Site is offering something connected to its roots with the opportunity to step back in time and participate in a new program called Camp Britannia: A Soldiers’ Overnight Adventure.

After arriving on site Friday afternoon, the new soldier recruits begin their adventure with a tour of the site to explore the historic buildings and step back in time at 7 p.m.th century.

“They will be led by our historical interpreters in the art of British Army tent-making and fire-making techniques, will be fitted for a British soldier’s uniform and will be taught drills,” explains Melissa Elsdon, marketing and relations co-ordinator Discovery Harbor media.

Elsdon says soldiers at the military establishment would have practiced daily to remain in a state of readiness for invasion by American invaders during the tensions of the War of 1812.

Formerly known as the Historic Naval and Military Institutions, the site operated between 1817 and 1856. The Royal Navy operated a facility from its foundation year until 1834, while the British Army maintained a presence, directly or indirectly, of – throughout the history of the base.

Back to the present day, guests will also enjoy a black powder musket demonstration, learn about the guns the British Army would have used, tour the original stone officers’ quarters and share a dinner for 19 people.to-century soldier rations under the mess tent.

“At the end of the night, visitors will settle into their tents after a round of campfire stories, songs and fire-roasted bannock,” says Elsdon.

“Soldiers in the 1800s slept rough with little comfort, but for this experience we encourage visitors to bring a camping pad and sleeping bag to ensure a good night’s sleep.”

And as the morning started early for the British soldiers, so will it be for the participants with historical performers ensuring everyone is awake and ready for the day with a traditional bugle and drum beat.

This will be followed by morning muster and inspection, a drill and marching drill and a hot breakfast before a final send off.

“This is a one-of-a-kind experience that’s perfect for families with kids over 10,” says Elsdon, “and those who love history and want to be immersed in this time period, as well as anyone looking for a one-of-a-kind. good adventure this summer.”

The cost is $150 for adults, tax included, with youth ages 10 to 15 paying $60, tax included. Available dates are July 26 – 27, along with August 9 – 10 and August 23 – 24. The program will also be offered in French on certain dates.
