A group of people were out in town last night singing and chanting in peaceful demonstrations.


The singing was made louder with the help of microphones as some members of the group held up signs reading “Please give back the children”.

Iustin Dobre, 37, of Clifton Mount, Harehills, was charged after a bus was set on fire during riots in Harehills, Leeds, on Thursday night, West Yorkshire Police said.

He was charged with violent disorder and reckless arson to endanger life. Police said he was arrested to appear at Leeds Monday’s court.

Officers said the riots broke out in the east of the city on Thursday night as officers responded to reports of social workers facing hostility while dealing with a child protection issue.

Responding officers were attacked and helped the welfare staff to safety before the disturbance escalated, with people damaging vehicles and setting fires, according to Deputy Chief Pat Twiggs. Specialist law enforcement officers were deployed and came under a “barrage of bricks and rockets” from a large group of people.

The father of the removed children appealed to authorities to return them as West Yorkshire Police removed them “to a safe place” while attending an incident with social services on Luxor Street.

He told The Daily Mirror: “Please bring my children back. I want them back. Why should I take my children? They were taken from us.”

In a statement, Leeds City Council said it had “agreed to undertake an urgent review of the case and to work with Romanian and Roma-led organisations, churches and the honorary consulate of Romania and other representatives of the family in the best interests of the family . and a wider Roma community.

“We are appealing to all communities to remain calm and ensure that we do not see any more disturbances such as those witnessed last night which have brought fear and anger to the communities of Harehills.

“Local people are devastated by what happened and we want to make sure the distressing scenes we saw don’t happen again. Such actions will have a long-lasting and damaging impact on our community.

The family, who are part of the Roma community, have pledged to go on hunger strike until their children are returned to them.

Ştefania Banu, the local community leader, speaking to The Mirror, said: “The mother and father refuse to eat until their children recover. We fully support them.

“We believe it was an injustice that can be remedied by the authorities if they review the case. What they promised they would do.”
