M1 Brent Cross diversion route from national motorways in full

A crash has closed four junctions on the M1 this afternoon (Sunday 21 July). It caused chaos for drivers in north London. The M1 has been closed southbound between junction 4 near Elstree and junction 1 near Wembley following an accident.

The Metropolitan Police are on the scene, together with traffic officers from the National Highways. National Highways said traffic caught up during the closure is being cleared by tailgating at J2.

A diversion route has been put in place to avoid the crash, which happened between Junction 2 and Junction 1. The National Highways Agency says cars can exit the M1 at Junction 2, but heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) will need to exit the M1 at Junction 4.

The diversion route below is not suitable for trucks. National Highways says: “There are delays on the approach to J2, so we would advise people to exit at J4 to follow the diversion to avoid being caught in traffic.”

Follow the Hollow Circle diversion symbol on the road signs to follow the diversion route.
